What can you do with a nice warm spring day in Idaho? How about going riding in St. Anthony sand dunes. Five of us decide it was worth the drive to St. Anthony for a few days of riding. Mike and Harv drove down from Northern Idaho, while Travis, Don and I drove over from Boise. While we were there we meet a guy who drove 1800 miles by himself to ride these dunes, so that made us feel lucky we are only 5 hours away.
Our trip started out by me staying up late Thursday night drinking beers with the neighbors, Bill & Julie. Even though I knew we would be leaving at 4:00AM I just couldn’t say no to good company and cold drinks. After just a few hours sleep we met Mike and Harv for breakfast first thing Friday morning. I need something to wake me up and a big fat ham & cheese omelet did the trick. For the first ride we took off to play at Choke Cherry to see who’s quad could make it and who’s couldn’t. I think everyone had no problem making it to the top except for Travis and his little warrior. No matter how many times he tries it just can’t make it to the top. After watching Travis struggle I decided to let him ride Wendy’s Predator and then he had no problem betting everyone who tried to catch him. Travis said next trip things will be different. No more Warrior and he plans to welcome a new Yamaha 450. Of course I will have to teach him how to ride a machine that powerful, so it maybe next year before Travis can actually race anyone.
After a long ride out to Choke Cherry we stopped for a lunch break. Don was pretty tired riding his motorcycle and decided he would keep an eye on base camp. The guy who drove out from Oklahoma, or wherever he was from, decided he would ride along with us. He was a nice guy but we felt compelled to show him what riding was like in Idaho dunes, so we turn up the heat. Now at this point everyone was having a good time except Harv. Harv felt the need to test out how hard rocks really are. And what I mean by that is he wanted to see if a rock could bend an ATV aluminum rim. Guess what? Rims do bend and in the middle of the dunes that is no fun. So you have probably figure out that Harv ran into a rock and bent his rim, so we spend the remainder of the day riding back and getting a spare tire for Harv and then searching the entire dunes for him. Good thing I had my GPS with us, because without that it would have been hard to find him. Note: Always care a rope and GPS for problems like this.
After a good nights rest, the next day we headed back out to Choke Cherry and Devils bowl. While we were there we ran into a couple of 13 year old boys and a 12 year boy riding a couple of Polaris Predators and a Honda 450R. If you want to feel slow just race these kids. They just flew up the hill and nobody could catch them. I have video and hope to post it on the site soon.
That is just about all the action that happened this time. We plan to go back in the fall, mid September so mark your calendars and come with us if you want to have good time. But if you are too scared and can’t hang with the big boys that’s ok we will do some girly rides next time.
Hope to see you there.
